When I was younger, I was totally in love with the character Mikey in the cult film The Goonies, a film I must have seen a good twenty times.
When it came out, I was eight years old.
Mikey/Sean Astin
I felt a real crush on this young adventurer, shy and anxious.
Later I discovered it in the Lord of the Rings trilogy films.
I struggled to recognize him at first.
The role of Sam Gamgee, a secondary character but a true hero, suits him perfectly.
No longer an introverted young teenager, but a courageous hobbit, who shows audacity and tenacity.
Frodo’s faithful companion even in the flames of Mount Doom, Sam Gamgee is probably one of the most complex characters in The Lord of the Rings . A challenge that earned Sean Astin an Oscar for best supporting actor for The Return of the King in 2003, the only statuette won by an actor in the entire trilogy, which nevertheless won multiple awards. I saw him again more recently in the excellent series Stranger Things , where he plays Winona Ryder’s companion. Sean plays Bob Newby , one of the recurring characters in the second season.
“A kind-hearted man, a former geek who was in high school with Joyce and Hopper and now runs the local radio station.”
But above all, a nice nod because Stranger Things is openly inspired by the film The Goonies , and its eighties atmosphere.
The loop is closed.
