Actor Henry Cavill has just joined this adaptation of the cult cartoon from the 80s.
Did you grow up in the 80s and Antenne 2 cartoons? Then you’ll be happy to learn that a film adapted from the Voltron series is in the pipeline at Amazon. The project has just had a big boost with the arrival of Henry Cavill in its cast. Let’s take stock.
Between Goldorak and Pacific Rim
Remember: Voltron told the adventures of a team of five space explorers, the Voltron Force. They pilot lion robots that have the ability to unite to form a giant robot, and which allows them to defend their galaxy from evil.
This Western animated series is in the lineage of the cult Mazinger, Great Mazinger and of course Goldorak . Composed of 124 episodes released between 1984 and 1985, it was in fact a mix of two Japanese series, GoLion and Dairugger XV.
In France, Voltron was broadcast on the show Chaud les glaçons! on Antenne 2, but only partially, due to lack of audience.
This upcoming Voltron film produced by Amazon studio MGM will be directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber, who also directed Skyscraper in 2018 and Netflix ‘s Red Notice , and written by the little-known Ellen Shanman.
Henry Cavill joins the young Daniel Quinn-Toye in the cast, for whom this will be his first real on-screen project, with the exception of an appearance in the series Badults.
While the story of the feature film is not yet known, Voltron is a new intellectual property (or “IP”, so precious in Hollywood) attached to Henry Cavill. The actor who plays Superman in the DCEU and Geralt of Rivia in The Witcher series seems to still be looking for his next big role.
Besides Voltron , which still seems very young in its development, this one could be in the Highlander reboot by Chad Stahelski, which is being filmed in early 2025 in Scotland.
The British actor is also part of the Warhammer 40K game adaptation project , currently in development at Amazon.
While you wait to see Voltron on the big screen, and if you are a fan of the series, note that the eight seasons of the 2016 remake – Voltron: Legendary Defender – are available on the Netflix streaming platform.
