Before shooting a new scene, he used to ask the directors, the Coen brothers: “Did the Dude smoke one just before?”
Which meant “did my character smoke a joint just before?”
The Coen brothers then told him whether they wanted his eyes blown out or not.
If anything, Jeff Bridges would rub his eyelids vigorously just before the take began, which gave him the look of a stoner…
